Notesbar. The most common questions are answered below.
My note is not synchronising
Notesbar saves a verified local copy before it tries to sync. Open Settings and check
iCloud Sync. Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account and Notesbar must
be allowed to use iCloud. Leave the app open briefly with a network connection, then choose
Check for Updates, or Try iCloud Again if that button is shown. When iCloud has
confirmed the current revision, Notesbar shows
Up to Date.
Notesbar uses Apple's CloudKit private database. Current versions do not create or update a
Notesbar folder or note file that you can browse in iCloud Drive. A one-time migration may
read a note created there by an earlier Notesbar version; the original legacy file is left
unchanged.
Notesbar shows Older Note Check Needed
Before Notesbar starts with an empty cloud copy, it checks whether an earlier app version
left a note in iCloud Drive. If that check is temporarily unavailable, cloud writes pause so
the older note cannot be missed or overwritten. Make sure iCloud Drive is available, then
choose Try iCloud Again.
If you know that no older Notesbar note is needed, choose
Continue Without Older Note. This continues with the current local note and CloudKit;
it does not delete or change any legacy file. You can still select such a file later with
Import Note….
I am offline or iCloud is temporarily unavailable
Keep editing. Notesbar continues to save on this device and retries iCloud automatically.
When the connection returns, leave the app open and choose Try iCloud Again or
Check for Updates. Do not uninstall the app while this device holds the only current
copy.
iCloud storage is full
The current note remains saved on this device, but that version cannot reach your other
devices yet. Free space in your iCloud account, keep Notesbar installed on the up-to-date
device, then choose the retry button shown in Settings: Try iCloud Again or
Check for Updates.
Notesbar shows Not Saved, or this device's local storage is full
The latest editor text may not be safely stored yet. Keep Notesbar open, copy the text
currently shown into another document, and free local storage before closing the app. After
local saving works again, return to Settings and use the retry button that is shown.
I signed out of iCloud or changed Apple Account
Signing out pauses iCloud sync; the local note remains on the device. Sign in again and
allow Notesbar to use iCloud.
If the Apple Account changes while this device holds a different local note, Notesbar pauses
cloud writes instead of copying one account's note into another automatically. Open Settings
and find iCloud Needs a Choice, then choose whether to use the current account's note,
sync this device's note, or keep the note only on this device. Preserved versions remain
available under Previous Versions.
Notesbar says the iCloud copy was removed
Notesbar does not treat a missing CloudKit record as an instruction to erase the local
note. Cloud writes pause. In Settings, choose Restore Note to iCloud to make this
device's verified copy current in iCloud, or choose to keep it only on this device. Check
Previous Versions before choosing if you are unsure.
Notesbar shows another iCloud warning
Cloud Copy Needs Repair means the iCloud data could not be verified. Cloud writes are
paused and the local note is not replaced. Check Previous Versions first; only choose
Repair iCloud from This Mac or Repair iCloud from This Device if the note currently
shown on that device is the copy you want in iCloud.
iCloud Data Reset means the encrypted iCloud data is no longer available to Notesbar.
The local note is preserved. Choose whether to restore that note to iCloud or keep it only on
the device.
iCloud Restricted means the Apple Account or a device policy prevents Notesbar from
using iCloud. The note stays local until the restriction changes.
Sync Queue Not Saved means the note itself is saved locally, but the pending iCloud
update could not be queued safely. Keep Notesbar open, free local storage and use the retry
button in Settings.
On This Mac or On This Device means you previously chose local-only mode. Nothing
is uploaded until you choose Resume iCloud Sync.
Notesbar says the note is too large
Notesbar supports text-only RTF notes up to 750 KB. RTF formatting also uses space, so the
limit is not the same as a visible character count. If the current note is too large to save
or upload, keep the app open and shorten it, or copy part into another document, until the
warning clears.
iCloud Note Too Large means the copy in iCloud is larger than this app version can
open. Notesbar does not replace the note on this device. Use a device or app version that can
still open the iCloud copy to export or shorten it; do not uninstall Notesbar from the device
that holds the copy you need.
Note Couldn’t Sync means CloudKit rejected the upload size even though Notesbar saved
the note on this device. Shorten it or copy part into another document, then try again.
Notesbar reports a sync conflict
A conflict means that the local and cloud versions were changed independently from the same
earlier version. Notesbar pauses cloud writes and preserves both before asking you to keep this
device's version or use the current cloud version.
On the Mac, open Settings and choose Previous Versions… under Recovery to open the
folder containing preserved copies. On iPhone or iPad, tap the gear button and choose
Previous Versions.
My note is missing or I need an older version
Do not uninstall the app or delete its app data. The current local file, previous
versions and conflict copies may still be present even when the app displays the wrong text.
On Mac, open Settings and choose Previous Versions…. Copy an RTF file to a location
such as the Desktop before opening or importing it. Check in this order:
notes.rtf (current local copy), notes.previous.rtf (immediately
previous copy), Conflicts, History and Daily History.
Do not rename or delete the originals inside the Notesbar folder.
If the menu is unavailable, in Finder choose Go → Go to Folder and enter
~/Library/Containers/se.jos.notesbar/Data/Library/Application Support/Notesbar/.
On iPhone or iPad, tap the gear button, choose Previous Versions, then
Export All Versions… and save the export in Files. It includes the available current,
safety, history and conflict copies. Do this before reinstalling or uninstalling the app.
Recovery files are rotated automatically: conflict copies are capped and the total history
is kept within a combined size limit. The current note and latest safety copy are protected
separately. Local history is a recovery aid, not a replacement for an independent backup of
important text.
I am considering reinstalling Notesbar
Do not reinstall as a first troubleshooting step. Removing the app can remove its
local note and all local recovery versions. A current CloudKit copy may download again after
reinstalling with the same Apple Account, but a newer device-only change cannot.
Before reinstalling, open Previous Versions. On Mac, copy the current RTF and any
recovery files you need to another folder. On iPhone or iPad, export all available versions
to Files. Verify the exported files before removing the app.
I cleared the version history but one copy remains
This is expected. Clear Version History… removes older history and conflict copies,
but Notesbar retains the latest automatic safety copy. In the iPhone and iPad recovery view,
that copy is shown separately from the now-empty Version History section.
I want to import an existing note
Open Settings and choose Import Note… under Notes. Select an RTF file. After
confirmation, a successful import replaces the note on devices synced through iCloud; the
selected original file is not changed and the prior note remains available for recovery.
I tried to paste an image or file
Notesbar stores text-only RTF notes. Images and file attachments are not added; text that
is also available on the clipboard may still be pasted. Keep images and files in another app
and add a text reference in Notesbar if needed.
Formatting was pasted into my note
Select the affected text and use Clear Formatting in the toolbar. Bold, strikethrough and
bullet lists can be applied to the current selection from the same toolbar.
The text size is not what I expected
Choose a named size under Text Size in Settings. Notesbar applies that size to the whole note,
while preserving bold, italic and other supported formatting.
Light or dark mode looks wrong
Choose System, Light or Dark under Appearance in Settings. System follows the current
appearance selected for the Mac, iPhone or iPad.
I want the Mac toolbar on the side
Open Settings, choose Toolbar Position and select Right. Select Bottom to return it below the
note.
Responsibility
Notesbar is provided as is, without express or implied warranties about its
availability, accuracy, reliability or suitability for a particular purpose.
Notesbar is a simple note editor and synchronisation aid, not a backup, archive or
professional records-management service. Keep an independent copy of important text.
The terms for using the app are Apple's standard licence agreement for App Store
apps, which you accept when you download it.
Any mandatory consumer rights that apply to you remain unaffected.
